Inspired by Afro Cuban folkloric classes that feature live percussion, Ryan and Sidney will be offering a special class using Cuban social dance rhythms (Salsa, Son, Cha-cha-chá, and more), but with LIVE drumming. This special Popular Ritmo dance class will be offered just once (for now) on Wednesday, November 29th, and will feature LIVE percussion -- Ryan on bongó and bell, Rodrigo on timbales, and Mena on congas.
We'll work on how to connect our steps and movements to the rhythms of the percussion, dancing on 1 (a tiempo), on 2 (a contratiempo), and on 3 (callejero), as well as some common breaks and accent sequences used in our favorite timba songs such as Sandunguera (bombo), Loco (ponche), Elegante, Revé, and more.
Class is open to and useful for all levels of dancers -- we'll do individual footwork and movement as well as partner dancing, but the focus will be on the connection to the rhythms of the drums.
Location: A beautiful new dance space in SF - 301 8th Street (at Folsom).
Pre-registration has closed but you can still take the class - $20 drop-in (cash or check only)
